Three Reasons Women Avoid Negotiating

June 5, 2016

Women avoid negotiating for three reasons.

1) Fear

2) Lack of confidence on how to negotiate

3) Desire to please people

And, let's be honest, negotiating can take time, money and (lots of) energy.

I would like to share a formula for negotiating that someone once shared with me.

The simple, immediately-applicable formula is:

A - Appreciation (Thank you for your time in putting together the proposal.)

N - Naturally, (I need to stay within the budget and plan for expenses.)

O - Obviously, (You need to get paid in a timely manner.)

T - The ask (Would you be open to considering completing the project in three phases with a pay-as-you-go option?)

Within the next week, how might you be able to implement this formula to create a win/win?

Remember, negotiation isn't just for large business deals. The formula can also be used for small day-to-day negotiating opportunities at the office or at home.

"So much of life is a negotiation - so even if you're not in business, you have opportunities to practice all around you." -Kevin O'Leary
